For the past five years, we have adopted a family in need during the holidays. We do this through a local organization called Ritter House who for over 30 years has been providing assistance to the homeless and working poor in our community.
Last year's adoption was extra special for us because it was the first year that our kids were really old enough to be involved in the process. Together with the big kids, we went out as a family and shopped for the like-aged kids in our adopted family. We talked often about the importance of giving back to your community and to those less fortunate. It was a great lesson for the kids and my heart just exploded to see them eagerly hand over our family's gifts to the organization on drop-off day.
I can't wait to do it again this year.
I hope you will consider doing something similar in your community if you don't already. It really takes so little to put a huge smile on a child's face at Christmas.
