I have such wonderful memories of my mother taking me into the city during the holidays so we could see the San Francisco Ballet's 'Nutcracker'. This year, I am going to recreate that magic with my own children. The postcards have started to arrive in the mail and I've begun to make my plans and purchase tickets. I am most excited about 'The Velveteen Rabbit' only because the brochure was gorgeous (and I'm a designer who can't help but love gorgeous things!)
In addition, I have discovered a wonderful secret around here - it's called The Marin Civic Center. Ever heard of it?! What an incredible resource for reasonably priced theater and music. Last year the big guy and I took turns taking the little guy on individual date nights - dinner + then some theater. 'Peking Acrobats', 'Drums!' and 'The Spirit of Uganda'. All were incredible and we plan to do it again this year now that Little Sister is old enough to sit through a performance.

how old do you have to be to go to the Velveteen Rabbit? am toying with the idea of bringing Elsa, but she's just 3... maybe too young?

That might be a tad young...although I've never seen it. Depends on the kid. The big kid sat through a 3 hour broadway show of The Lion King where is sister could not. Certainly next year she'll be fine.

There is also Stapleton's Nutcracker at the Civic Center. Much more low key I think. Let me know if you want to try and do that one and we can go together with the girls!

Civic center is very kid friendly and close. Tristen and went for several years. Sometimes you can have tea with the dancers and characters after the show:)Tristen enjoyed photos with the dancers and bears. My good friend Erica teaches at that ballet school and they do a wonderful job!

Actually, the Velveteen Rabbit is supposed to be great even for toddlers. Apparently it's really low-key.
