We got a new couch. And it's orange.
Well, 'Spice', actually.
I'm in love.
More than just getting a bold, new piece of furniture, which is always a highlight in my world, it actually marks the closure of a long period of useless living space.
You see, we have this great living room, and it's huge. Thirty feet by seventeen to be exact. It has Southern facing windows that view the mountain and bring beautiful light into the house. There has been just one problem, and it's a big one...
We never use the room.
We don't go into it. We don't watch movies in it. We don't entertain in it. We don't know why, but we never want to go into our living room. And ever since I admitted the absolute ridiculouslness of this to myself, I have been hell bent on solving the problem.
So I thought about it...for like, oh I don't know, a couple years.
I rearranged furniture, asked peoples opinions, I even considered bringing in a professional to tell me what I should have been able to solve on my own.
Then one day, while picking my son up from a playdate, a mother asked me to help her with her similarly large living space, one that she had divided into two seperate areas just with the arrangement of furnishings.
"Leave it." I said. "It's brilliant!"
Her mess was my solution. And so I ran home and started planning to divide our big, long living room into two inviting sitting areas. The best part of it? We needed a second couch!
I had hoped to take the opportunity and order one crazy print couch that would contrast our otherwise, plain sectional, but I had to nix all patterns when they clashed with a patterned rug I had and was commited to using. I finally solved all issues with the perfect swatch of 'Spice'. A room was born!
I divided the room with our buffet. I've always loved this piece of furniture because it's glass backed and ideal for putting up against a floor to ceiling window, or for dividing a room! (Until, now I've always had it against the wall.)
I still need to rework the pictures above the couch. It used to be a collection of black and white photos, but I'm thinking I need to grab some frames from other areas of the house and bring them in to break up the look a bit. Here are some items I've pulled together.
When the rugs are all rolled out and our first couch is put to rest in its final, final position, I will post pictures of our new living room with it's two seating areas. I can't wait to reclaim half the house!
We had a huge great room in our Dominican area home. I had 3 different areas and would switch them around from time to time.
To give you an idea about the room's size, we put up porter's bus load of crew team women from ucsb...there were about 35 of them all on the floor of our great room in their sleeping bags.
